I teach preschool to a group of 3-5 year old students. In our science center I set out a variety of objects, including a small bobcat skull. The children were drawn to this item, and I asked them what they thought of it. They quickly announced that they had found a dinosaur head. My policy is to help children reason things out, rather than giving them answers, so I set to work to correct their misinterpretation. "How big is a dinosaur?" I asked. "As big as a tree! As big as a house!", obviously many of them had been to the dinosaur museum and understood that dinosaurs were big. "Is a dinosaur head bigger than your head?" Obviously the answer was yes. So I had them compare the skull to their heads, and one child quickly pointed out that the skull was smaller than a child's head. Ah ha, I thought, they are finally getting it! The child looked up at me quite confidently and announced, "Duh, teacher, it's a BABY dinosaur." So much for that!
